Is Ironheart hiding one of the biggest twists on Disney Plus? Alden Ehrenreich speaks out on the surprising true nature of his MCU character.
Leading up to the release of Ironheart, everybody knew that there was something more to Alden Ehrenreich’s character. While the actor isn’t the biggest name in the world, he’s certainly big enough that Marvel wouldn’t cast him as a nobody in the MCU for an entire Disney Plus show. Which is why fans across the world were shocked when it was revealed that he wasn’t playing Joe McGillicuddy, but rather Zeke Stane, the son of Iron Man villain Obadiah Stane.
It’s a twist that connections the Disney Plus series back to the literal earliest days of the MCU. It sets up a lot of interesting implications, not just for Ironheart, but the franchise as a whole. With the reveal now out in the open, Alden Ehrenreich spoke out about the legacy of Zeke Stane, and how it feels to plant new feet on such well-worn tracks.
“Well, it’s nice to be a part of something that relates back to the whole legacy of the story,” Ehrenreich explained in a recent chat with Screen Rant. “Especially because that character was in the first real Marvel movie that started all of this.”
Alden Ehrenreich Spoke To RDJ About Ironheart
And it seems that Alden Ehrenreich was able to stretch those early MCU connections into reality. The actor would go on to reveal that he spoke to Robert Downey Jr. about pursuing the role of Zeke Stane in Ironheart while the two were filming Oppenheimer together. Luckily, it seems as though the actor was incredibly supportive of Ehrenreich taking the leap.
“And I had just worked with Robert Downey Jr. when I got this part, and so I got to talk to him about it and that was nice,” Ehrenreich explained “I just FaceTimed with him, and I was like, ‘So this has come my way, and this is the role – what do you think?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, do it.’”
When it comes to legacy characters like Zeke Stane, the MCU has always had a…choppy history. However, even despite of the mixed reviews Ironheart has been receiving, it seems as though there’s been nothing but love for Alden Ehrenreich’s take on the beloved character. And with only three episodes left, it’s certain there’ll be more astonishing moments to come.
