Is Supergirl making some drastic changes from the comics? James Gunn gives fans some insight into Lobo and Krem of the Yellow Hills in the DC Universe.
Even though Supergirl (previously named Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) is going to be the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, details about the project have been surprisingly sparse. The film is a few days from being a year away, and fans still haven’t seen anything beyond casting news for some of the major characters, such as Lobo and Krem of the Yellow Hills.
James Gunn himself opened up about these two characters just a bit on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, giving fans new insight on what they can expect from them in Supergirl. While Lobo’s mere presence is a massive change from the comics, it seems the DC Universe’s live-action adaptation will make some changes to already present elements as well, with Krem of the Yellow Hills seemingly being much darker than presented in the original source material.
“Craig [Gillespie] has amped [Krem of the Yellow Hills] up,” Gunn teased. “He’s so scary and creepy. It’s so cool. Like, it’s really cool.”
What Is Lobo’s Role In Supergirl?
While Krem of the Yellow Hills may be the main villain of Supergirl, it’s clear that even James Gunn knows that fans only want one thing: The Main Man himself. While he didn’t reveal much about Lobo, Gunn teased that the character will be used to bridge the gaps presented in the original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, making it a much more cohesive project.
“The truth is [Supergirl:] Woman of Tomorrow the comic is very much a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one thruline, one three-act story, a more traditional story, so Lobo helps us to do that. It’s not an amalgamation. He’s a totally separate character. He’s himself.”
Given how frequently comic book adaptations have changed the core of a character, it’s a relief to see that the same thing is not happening to Lobo in Supergirl. While it may seem odd that this is the second film being put out in the new DC Universe, these details suggest that they’re in for quite a treat. Or, when it comes to Krem of the Yellow Hills, quite the scare!
Supergirl is set to release on June 26, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
