Lanterns is getting mature! Nathan Fillion teases getting down and dirty as Guy Gardner in the upcoming Green Lantern series for the DC Universe.
Perhaps the most exciting part about getting a truly cohesive DC Universe is being able to see characters from across the franchise appear in projects with wildly different tones. There’s no character better representative of this than Guy Gardner, with Nathan Fillion already set to reprise his role as the Green Lantern in Lanterns and Peacemaker following his debut in Superman.
And it seems Nathan Fillion himself is welcoming the diversity of tones present in the DC Universe. The actor recently spoke about his upcoming role in the Green Lantern series. While he didn’t say much, he did praise his Lanterns co-star Aaron Pierre. The actor also suggested that Guy Gardner will be swearing like a sailor, saying he’s dropped more F-Bombs than any other time in his career!
“Aaron, he’s got a voice like butter,” Fillion gushed to Entertainment Weekly. “And he’s statuesque, like he’s carved out of marble. He’s very, very specific about his character and what his character’s going through. His character’s clearly going through something.”
“And then along comes this gregarious, smug son of a bitch in Guy Gardner. And in that show…boy, Guy Gardner. I’ve dropped more F-bombs in that project than I have in, I think, my entire career put together.”
Guy Gardner’s Role In Lanterns
Hearing that description, many may roll their ideas at the idea of Guy Gardner being another joke machine- only this time with swearing. However, it seems Lanterns plans to bring nuance to even the most annoying Green Lantern. Nathan Fillion continues on that the series will end up changing his character, potentially giving him a new attitude heading forward through the DC Universe.
“But by the end of it, you can tell there is a shift. Guy Gardner is no longer comfortable. He is no longer feeling smug. Then you can see where John’s strength really lies. That is a strong individual. I don’t really have any scenes directly with Hal Jordan, but meeting Kyle, he’s everything you’d hope he would be. Very fun, very nice man, very lighthearted, and fun to be around.”
It’s interesting that Guy Gardner will be eating humble pie so early into the DC Universe’s lifespan. While it’s not likely the Green Lantern will make a full face turn after his appearance in Lanterns, it’s very possible that the series brings Nathan Fillion’s take on the character much more in line with his comic book roots: being brash, yet empathetic.
