Pussy Riot!

Luna Rossa: Eight Cuts In The Giallo Vein is a dark Italo compilation based around the mystery, murder and madness of all that is Giallo.
Serving as a soundtrack to a fictitious film Luna Rossa. the album features Johnny Jewel of Italians Do It Better fame, alongside a line up of other suspects include Legowelt under his Occult Orientated Crime moniker. Prefuse 73, Antoni Maovvi, Makeup And Vanity Set and Om & Grails member Emil Amos.
Simple Symmetry (pictured above) aka Sasha & Sergey Lipsky’s contribuition is the atmospheric ‘Il Gatto Nero’, which samples the label’s official mascot, a cat called Demon. Thanks to Secrets of Sound, the evil label masterminds behind the whole misdemenour, you can hear it right now, well ahead of its release on June 16.

We spoke to Kane from the label to grill him on exactly what the hell was going on – here’s his witness statement.
Say hello and introduce yourself…
I’m Kane Banner and the person of interest behind Secrets Of Sound
Tell us a bit about the label and what you’ve released to date
The label like myself is based in Lisbon Portugal and Ive released two previous compilations on the Exotic Origins series, a balearic outing “The Last Resort” and the space themed “Cosmosis”.
What’s the idea behind the Giallo compilation? How did it come about?
I wanted to do something with Italo and something with horror, so this sort of combines both, I love those films and the music was always such a big part of that genre.
Can you explain what Giallo is as a concept – it’s a type of film, no?
Gialo was based on detective novels that had pages that turned yellow hence the Italian name “giallo”.Through the 60s to 80s, there were lots being made, the Dario Argento ones the most well known and had the tropes of masked, leather gloved killer never that is never seen, along with hypnotic visuals and lots of supernatural and occult themes, Not your standard slashers, these were beautifully shot, intoxicatingly colourful and downright weird.
Talk us down the tracklisting briefly… Who is involved?
There is Johnny Jewel from Italians Do It Better, a giant who is certainly influenced by Giallo and cinematics, Legowelt who I had to get under his Occult Oriented Crime moniker for obvious reasons, Prefuse 73 who has just done a few crime themed releases himself and the masters of the genre Antoni Maiovvi and Umberto that certainly knocked it out of the park. The final track is from Emil Amos of Om & Grails fame which may be the best final credits music ever heard. There as usual is a secret track on the label you can only get if you buy the record, the mystery awaits you..
Thanks for the chance to share the Simple Symmetry track… Tell us more about it musically…
They had originally done a suspiria themed release a decade ago so I wanted to get a different version of that but it ended up being a totally different all new live band recording and adding Gilbert Broid with whole new elements. The lyrics that I wrote are actually an Italian translation of the Police song ‘Every Breath You Take’ as when you listen to them, they sound like an obsessed stalker: “every move you make, I’ll be watching you”…”can’t you see, you belong to me”, I thought it was a perfect retexturing.

We understand your cat’s heartbeat is on the track – how come?! Is he/she a fan of the finished mix?
I adopted a stray cat called Demon here in Lisbon and he has had lots of health issues, when I was present for one of his scans at the vet I noticed the sound was a perfect beat, I recorded and forwarded this and some of his meows to the boys and the rest is history, it seemed to be a perfect concept as the keyboard they were using featured the logo of a black cat. ‘Il Gatto Nero’ was meant to be and when Demon hears the track he does get spooked at hearing his own voice, he also makes an appearance on the back of the album’s artwork.

What’s next for the label after this?
Next is a New Age Ambient Compilation that seems to be great timing with the world’s seeming implosion and then after that an Erotica themed outing that will be super dancefloor friendly. There are ten planned in this series and a trilogy compilation of rare tracks from the master J.A.Z called “Forbidden Fruit”. Also some split records with a different artist each side covering a particular phenomena. Stay tuned.
